  • "I believe that the people around me should be healthy, especially the growing generation. Any person worth their salt, whoever they are, wherever they are, has a responsibility to help each other." Vafo Zamirov, community health promoter, Tajikistan.
"1 million lives unlocked" campaign
The story of Vafo

Vafo takes pride in giving young men the knowledge they need to make healthy decisions, drawing on his own history of substance abuse. For him, taking on the role of community health promoter has been an opportunity to start anew.

1 Million Lives Unlocked is the name of a new campaign launched by Aga Khan Foundation Canada in March 2018. The centrepiece of the campaign is an interactive, bilingual digital report on AKFC’s website:

1 Million Lives Unlocked shares the results of an unprecedented partnership between Aga Khan Foundation Canada and the Government of Canada to tackle the root causes of poverty in Africa and Asia.

Launched in 2012, $100 million partnership was a joint investment, with $75 million from the Canadian government and $25 million donated by Canadians to AKFC.

It is a truly Canadian partnership that would not have been possible without the generous support of the 40,000 Canadians who support AKFC every year through World Partnership Walk and World Partnership Golf.
