It is not easy for an external emergency response team to reach remote villages in northern Afghanistan – a region prone to multiple hazards – so the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat has taught villagers to be self-reliant, training them in emergency response and disaster preparedness procedures to reduce causalities and ensure greater safety and resilience.  

In cross-border regions of Central Asia that are water and resource poor and affected by conflict, the Aga Khan Foundation and its partners implemented a programme that benefitted more than 300,000 people through improved access to and management of irrigation water, drinking water, and grazing lands.
