Today, FCL is working with thousands of smokie vendors countrywide, many of whom are reporting significant gains in income and better prospects.
Distance education: UCA equips youth to address local and global issues despite COVID-19
As an Earth and Environmental Sciences major, remote learning does not allow for the lab and field work that Hangoma enjoys. However, she sees how remote learning is helping her grow to be more responsible and flexible. Dr. Mohssen Moazzen, the chair of the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department at the University of Central Asia (UCA), understands why Hangoma misses the interactive component of her studies. UCA’s campus in Khorog allows him to teach students about geomaterials and mountain range formation amidst the fascinating geological setting of the Pamir Mountains. This semester, Dr. Moazzen and his colleagues are incorporating virtual field trips and laboratories in the Earth and Environmental Sciences department. Although these virtual activities are not the same as in-person labs and field work, they are still helping students understand the practical side of environmental studies.
Zainab Mala: Science and mathematics teacher at Aga Khan School receives IT award
Ms Zainab Mala is a Science and Mathematics teacher at the Diamond Jubilee High School in Mumbai, managed by the Aga Khan Education Service, India. Like many in the teaching profession, Zainab constantly strives to create effective learning environments to inspire and enable students to fulfil their potential. Recently she was awarded the “Most Innovative IT Teacher Award” at the IT Guru Awards 2020 – demonstrating her commitment and the potential women have in science and technology.
Miriam Mutebi: AKU faculty first African to be appointed to global cancer board
In December 2020, Dr Miriam Mutebi, a consultant breast surgical oncologist and assistant professor in surgery at the Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa was appointed to the board of directors of the Union for International Cancer Control.
