Kenya: Facebook training to sharpen journalists’ digital skills

Internet giant, Facebook is partnering with Kenya’s Aga Khan University (AKU) to equip locals with digital journalistic skills to tell their Kenyan stories. The six months "Video Journalism Fellowship" will be hosted at the AKU’s Graduate School of Media and Communications (GMSC) in Nairobi. Speaking at the launch event, AKU GSMC Interim Dean, Alex Awiti, said the AKU-Facebook partnership redefined citizen journalism where Kenyans would tell real-life stories using their smartphones to capture video content.

Africa’s future on the agenda as Kusi Ideas Festival begins

Kusi Ideas Festival officially kicked off on 8 December in Kigali, Rwanda, in what promises to be illuminating discussions about the future of the African continent. The Festival, jointly organised by the Nation Media Group (NMG) and AKDN, brings together various stakeholders and leaders. Speaking at the opening ceremony, NMG board chairman Wilfred Kiboro said the festival was brought to Rwanda "because the country is the perfect place to launch such an important festival, as it represents the possibilities that societies everywhere in Africa can achieve."

Tanzania: Government says it values early childhood education

Tanzania has reiterated its commitment to promoting early childhood education and health given their significance as the foundations of supplementary learning. On 4 December in Dar-es-Salaam, at the 7th Annual Research Institute organised by the Aga Khan University - Institute of Educational Development, Tanzanian Minister for Education, Professor Joyce Ndalichako, said the government of Tanzania had ratified several international conventions and declarations aimed at promoting and improving childhood education. The government decided to offer free basic education and also directed that all public primary schools across the country should have kindergarten classes.

AKAH supports Tajikistan’s Emergencies Committee to strengthen existing capacity

Last month, a five-day training on the use of hazard assessment and disaster management technologies, including Geographic Information System (GIS) and the application of drones or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), was conducted for the specialists of the Emergencies Committee of Tajikistan by the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat. Within the course of the training, the specialists were taught how to use GIS and UAV for hazard assessment, hazard prediction, emergency planning and management and how to make best use of technologies when disaster areas are inaccessible during emergency cases.
