Interview of Christopher Wilton-Steer on photographing the living history of the Silk Road

9 April 2021

Sponsored by the Aga Khan Foundation, The Silk Road: A Living History takes the viewer on a journey from London to Beijing, encountering many of the people, places and cultures along the ancient trade route. The exhibition’s linear design creates a physical route for the viewer, offering them the chance to travel by proxy. This outdoor exhibition offers visitors cultural stimulation at a time when we have been starved of it. In an interview with The London Magazine, Christopher said: "The purpose of this journey, beyond sating my own personal curiosity, was to create an exhibition that allowed people to walk from one end of Eurasia to the other through photographs, exploring some of the wonders of the Silk Road (particularly the Islamic world), learning about its history and about some of the connections between different cultures that lie just beneath the surface."
