Since 2009, the Professional Development Centre has directly benefited more than 350 professionals of education and indirectly benefited more than 1,000 teachers and 27,000 students, all from 16 public schools in Matola and Boane districts, Maputo Province.
The first phase of the Academy opened on 19 August 2013 and consisted of the Nursery School and the lower Junior School level, comprising today 82 children from ages 5 to 9 years, 63 of which are Mozambican.
The Aga Khan Academy, Maputo expects to have 750 students in 2020. One of the main goals of the Academy is that 50% of its Mozambican alumni will study under scholarships or financial aid scheme. The recruitment of students is merit based, means blind. A segment of students with financial resources will pay the school fees, vital for the sustainability of the project.
