Bridges between Afghanistan and Tajikistan

Shugnan Bridge is one of five bridges which the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) has built and rehabilitated over the Pyanj River to connect the Gorno-Badakhshan region in Tajikistan with Afghan Badakhshan. Providing communities on both sides of the border access to an expanded marketplace drastically increases the potential for income-generating activities and improve livelihoods. It also ensures healthcare services to communities in Afghan Badakhshan by facilitating the crossing of Tajik health professionals to Shugnan Clinic and other nearby community health posts.

"It has always seemed to me that bridges are among the most powerful and important symbols in human society - symbols of connection, of cooperation and of harmony." His Highness the Aga Khan speaking at the inauguration of the Ishkashim bridge, Tajikistan, 31 October 2006.
