Aga Khan Trust for Culture

Kabul, Afghanistan, 2 May 2002 - The Government of Afghanistan and the Municipality of Kabul today confirmed that the Aga Khan Trust for Culture will lead a project to enable reutilisation of the historic Bagh-e-Babur garden as a major public open space and also to rehabilitate neighbourhood residential dwellings and public sanitation facilities.

Mausoleum of Timur Shah (18th century founder of modern Afghanistan). Joint conservation work on the Timur Shah mausoleum is to be preceded by the clearance and maintenance of an area within 20 metres of the monument. Work will include relocation of temporary structures as well as urban planning for the vicinity of the mausoleum.

 

The Bagh-e-Babur gardens will be revitalised as a major public open space. Neighbourhood residential dwellings and public sanitation facilities will be rehabilitated. Babur, founder of the Mughal Empire, is buried in the gardens.
