His Highness the Aga Khan visits Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, 28-29 October 2006 - His Highness the Aga Khan made a brief visit to Bishkek where he met with a wide range of Kyrgyz leaders, including President Kurmanbek Bakiev, Prime Minister Feliks Kulov and senior parliamentarians. During the visit, the Aga Khan discussed new opportunities for local and regional economic development, as well as expansion of social development initiatives currently underway in various provinces of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Since its establishment in 2005, the Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance (AKAM) has taken over 25 years of microfinance activities, programmes and banks that were administered by sister agencies within the AKDN. The underlying objectives of the Agency are to reduce poverty, diminish the vulnerability of poor populations and alleviate economic and social exclusion. more
