International Workshop, 6-10 June 2005, Dushanbe, Tajikistan


In the interest of promoting economic development in Central Asia and encouraging greater integration of mountainous areas in the region, an international workshop on “Strategies for Development and Food Security in Mountainous Areas of Central Asia” was held 6-10 June 2005 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. It was sponsored by the Aga Khan Foundation, Capacity Building International, Germany (InWEnt), and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH.

A central aim was to provide the people from the four principal countries – Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic – with a forum to discuss common solutions to their problems and seek new ways to collaborate and communicate in pursuit of similar development goals.

These pages contain general information on the conference, including the objectives and list of participants; the conference recommendations that resulted from the various working groups; the 14 papers submitted in advance highlighting different facets of the region and challenges for development; PowerPoint presentations delivered at the conference; and other information including important links, photos, and contacts.

Forthcoming: A report detailing the working group discussions as well as full conference proceedings will be available in print and on the web in Spring 2006.
