Since 2002, AKDN has been supporting the establishment of institutions
and programmes that help develop an economically dynamic, politically stable
and intellectually and culturally vibrant Kyrgyz Republic. Its programmes
range from financial
institutions that are helping build the nation’s economic infrastructure
to support in several districts for the “tradition-bearers”
of Kyrgyz
music and oral recitation. Its rural
development, health and education projects in Alai and Chon Alai districts
of the Osh Oblast are implemented through the Mountain Societies Development
Support Programme (MSDSP).
Primary healthcare measures, such as immunisation, are essential components of community health, but often overall health only improves when the community understands the causes of illness, knows how to avoid them and is open to changing behaviours. Knowledge about the advantages of breastfeeding and the need for vitamin-rich foods are two examples of how awareness campaigns can have a significant impact on overall health. More

Providing Education in Remote Regions
01 July 2009 - In the remote mountains of the Kyrgyz Republic, AKDN is active in a variety of sectors. While the Aga Khan Agency for Microfi nance offers credits for livestock purchases and small enterprises, for example, the University of Central Asia’s School of Professional and Continuing Education provides formal, university-based, non-degree educational programmes, including vocational, professional development and personal improvement opportunities for youth and adults.
UCA's School of Professional and Continuing Education Teaches Critical Skills for Central Asia Economies
26 June 2009 - The University of Central Asia’s (UCA) School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPCE) is training adults and young people in the critical skills needed in the new Central Asia economies, including accounting, business English and mountain guide training. Over 5000 people have graduated from the SPCE.
