In India, programmes of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) span the states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Bihar and address a broad spectrum of development issues ranging from cultural revitalisation to education quality, health care to the development of rural areas. These initiatives include 82 schools and educational centres, a 137-bed multi-specialty acute care hospital in Mumbai, a rural support programme that has benefited 400,000 people in four Indian states and the restoration of a World Heritage site in the nation's capital.

Water supply and sanitation programmes have been central to most AKDN environmental health efforts. Programmes in sanitation and hygiene promotion are particularly important. In the Indian state of Gujarat, for example, a government programme to bring sanitation to all the state’s 18,000 villages features an annual “Nirmal Gram”, or Clean Village, award. More

Humayun’s Tomb Conservation Completed
13 September 2013 - The restoration of the Mughal Emperor Humayun’s 16th century garden tomb, the jewel of Mughal architecture that predates the Taj Mahal, has been completed. Six years of conservation works and 200,000 work days undertaken by master craftsmen have been required to restore the Tomb’s Mughal finery.
