Aga
Khan Humanities Project
The
Aga Khan Humanities Project (AKHP), headquartered in
Dushanbe, Tajikistan, promotes pluralism in ideas, cultures,
and people by supporting the development and implementation
of innovative humanities curricula based on the cultural
traditions of Central Asia. AKHP initiates and supports
curriculum and pedagogical development in universities,
community
outreach projects and institutional development through
long-term partnerships. AKHP was
founded by Dr. Rafique Keshavjee in 1997.

|
Central Asia is experiencing profound
cultural change. New foundations for identity are emerging
as the region faces much broader political and economic
horizons. Central Asians are reaching into their past for
inspiration, and seek assistance in drawing upon the rich
traditions of their societies to foster tolerance, ethics,
and civic virtues. Central Asian governments have also
called for support in advancing teacher education and
curricula. In response, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture
established AKHP in 1997 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. AKHPhas nine partner universities in Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
AKHP seeks to help Central Asians address current challenges, predicaments
and opportunities, and to build bridges across community
boundaries in the region. AKHP is founded on the belief
that it is impossible to encourage a civil, tolerant,
democratic, and humane society without citizens capable
of finding creative solutions, making responsible decisions
and considering the ethics of their actions.
