The
creation of the 30-hectare (74-acre) Al-Azhar Park, undertaken
in the historic district of Cairo by the Aga Khan Trust
for Culture, is a catalyst for urban renewal in one of the
most congested cities in the world. The book documents how
the Aga Khan Trust for Culture has turned a centuries-old
rubble dump into a park, restored 1.5 kilometres of 12th
century Ayyubid Wall and revitalised the adjoining neighbourhood
of Darb al-Ahmar.
The
volume, the first in the series devoted to the projects
of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, describes both theconstruction
of the Park and the methods by which the Trust is integrating
environmental and social development so as to improve the
overall quality of life in a neighbourhood where decline
was once considered inevitable. The broader context of urban
rehabilitation in historic cities is also explored.
Contributors
include Nasser Rabbat, Professor of Islamic Architecture
at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston,
and Robert Ivy, Editor in Chief of Architectural Record.
