The Aga Khan Foundation has been working with Bangladeshi non-governmental organisations (NGOs), as well as other AKDN agencies, since 1980. It maintained a long relationship with BRAC, one of Bangladesh's leading NGOs. The relationship emphasised rural development, microfinance and education. Its education activities include four schools and the creation of an Aga Khan Academy. Economic development activities are coordinated through two institutions which provide corporate finance and lending services to development projects. In culture, two Bangladeshi institutions received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, in 1989 and 2007.
