This academic medical centre's professional staff and facilities are among the best in the region. Modern patient care is made possible through collaboration between various health professionals and provision of state-of-the-art equipment to support diagnosis and treatment. Care is available to all patients in need. Those who are unable to pay for treatment, receive generous assistance through a variety of subsidies and the Hospital's patient welfare programme.

Utilisation of Services in 2002
In 2006, Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) in Karachi admitted over 40,000 inpatients and cared for over 500,000 outpatients. Over 5.5 million diagnostic tests were performed at medical services units throughout the country.

Subsidies and Patient Welfare Programme
AKUH provides high quality medical care to patients from all socio-economic groups - 74 percent of the Hospital’s patients are drawn from low to middle income groups. The subsidy provided by the Hospital enabled accessibility to a larger population.

Over Rs. 425 million (US$ 7 million) was disbursed in 2005-2006.

Since the inception of the Patient Welfare Programme, Rs 1.8 billion (over US$ 30 million) has been given to needy patients.

Ambulatory Care Centres
In order to enhance access to the general and special clinical services of the University Hospital in Karachi, AKUH is in the process of establishing offsite medical services/ambulatory care centres in Clifton, Shahra-e-Faisal and M. A Jinnah Road. These units will be components of a system of health care for which the University Hospital will be the centre of reference. The Hospital's objective is to provide high-quality care that is convenient and easily accessible to larger populations that reside in areas distant from the main campus on Stadium Road.

AKUH's Clinical Laboratory has become a national referral service for hospitals, clinicians and other laboratories. It is also a reference centre for AKDN's health units in Pakistan and East Africa. The Hospital's community outreach programme is served through Laboratory Collection Units in 18 cities of Pakistan. Accordingly, access to laboratory services has been facilitated by collection points for tests in various parts of Karachi and other cities listed in the table.

Facilities for Nuclear Medicine have started in the Department of Radiology. These ensure a full range of diagnostic services in AKUH that equate the status of this service to hospitals in the west. This state-of-the-art facility complement the broad range of imaging modalities currently available in the department for the support of diagnosis and intervention for complex clinical status.

The Sports and Rehabilitation Centre considerably enhances the Hospital's capacity for rehabilitation, enabling recovery of functions following Orthopaedic, Cardiac and Neurological injury and illness.
