Spotlights: Preparing Leaders

The Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008, is a regional referral centre for East Africa. Its research focuses on key social challenges facing the developing world, including infectious diseases, malnutrition, reproductive health, early childhood development, effective primary and secondary education and nursing care.
Photo: AKU / Jean-Luc RayThe Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, upgraded to a University teaching hospital in 2005, is at the centre of a major expansion of the Aga Khan University (AKU) in East Africa. A US$ 250 million Faculty of Health Sciences (AKU-FHS) is being created alongside the AKU teaching hospital in Nairobi. The AKU-FHS will be East Africa’s first private medical school of the first rank. Its mission is to expand the number of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals for East Africa and beyond.

To meet the ever growing demand for graduates who have the required leadership, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills needed by twenty-first century societies, AKU is also moving ahead with plans to become a comprehensive centre for learning with the construction of new Faculty of Arts and Sciences (AKU-FAS) campuses in Pakistan and East Africa. Expansion at the two main campuses is expected to double the student body and triple the overall physical plant.

Address by His Highness the Aga Khan at the Commencement Ceremony of the American University, Cairo, Egypt, 15 June 2006A US$ 450 million AKU-FAS will be built in Arusha, Tanzania. It will include both undergraduate and graduate programmes. The graduate schools will feature law, architecture and human settlement, management, government, economics, tourism and leisure and media. In its first phase, it will enrol 1500 undergraduate and 100 postgraduate students.

The new AKU-FAS campus in Karachi, Pakistan, will offer undergraduate and graduate courses ranging from archaeology to quantum physics, from music to South Asian history. To be built on 1,100 acres in North Karachi, it will provide the courses – and also the environment – for a broad study of the humanities.
