UK and Aga Khan Development Network Jointly Sponsor New Scholarships (Press Backgrounder)

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom and the Aga Khan Development Network have agreed to jointly fund scholarships to students from Iran, Kazakhstan, The Kyrgyz Republic, Syria, Tajikistan (and others to be agreed upon in the future). The scholarships will be tenable at universities in the United Kingdom and will be known as the "Aga Khan Development Network-Chevening Scholarships”.

The aim of the programme is to provide opportunities for postgraduate study in the United Kingdom for students and/or young professionals who demonstrate both academic excellence and the potential to become leaders, decision makers and opinion formers in their own countries. The scheme will start in the academic year 2002-03 and will provide for up to six awards annually. The awards will normally be for a period of up to 12 months for study on taught courses leading to a Master's degree in the following agreed areas: Health, Education, Agriculture, Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning and Land Management, Economics, Accounting and Finance, Public Administration and Management. As is usual with Chevening scholarships, the British Council will be responsible for the administration of the programme.
