Gouvieux, France, 26 December 2004 - The Secretariat of His Highness the Aga Khan confirms that a French court has concluded that it has jurisdiction over the divorce application filed by the Aga Khan in France on 4 June 2004.
Four months subsequent to the divorce filing by His Highness in France, his wife filed for divorce in the United Kingdom. A British court stayed those proceedings because of the prior filing in France.
Laurent Chambaz, French counsel to His Highness, said the French court issued an order dated 23 December 2004 deciding on the scope of its jurisdiction.
“The French court order notably states that the French court has jurisdiction to decide on the divorce. Additionally, the court also determined it has jurisdiction on financial maintenance for the duration of the proceedings,” Chambaz said.
His Highness and his wife were married in Gouvieux, France on 30 May 1998. The marriage was preceded by the signature in France of a prenuptial agreement providing for separation of assets. In respect of the confidentiality rules agreed immediately following the marriage and in conformity with the long-standing practice of not commenting on the private lives of either His Highness or members of his family, no further statement will be made concerning the above court order.
