The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is a group of development agencies with mandates that include the environment, health, education, architecture, culture, microfinance, rural development, disaster reduction, the promotion of private-sector enterprise and the revitalisation of historic cities. AKDN agencies conduct their programmes without regard to faith, origin or gender.
The Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, upgraded to a University teaching hospital in 2005, is at the centre of a major expansion of the Aga Khan University (AKU) in East Africa. A US$ 250 million Faculty of Health Sciences (AKU-FHS) is being created alongside the AKU teaching hospital in Nairobi. Since its establishment in 2005, the Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance (AKAM) has taken over 25 years of microfinance activities, programmes and banks that were administered by sister agencies within the AKDN. The underlying objectives of the Agency are to reduce poverty, diminish the vulnerability of poor populations and alleviate economic and social exclusion. more
