The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is a group of development agencies with mandates that include the environment, health, education, architecture, culture, microfinance, rural development, disaster reduction, the promotion of private-sector enterprise and the revitalisation of historic cities. AKDN agencies conduct their programmes without regard to faith, origin or gender.
In the aftermath of the December 2004 tsunami, AKDN went to work on the coast of the eastern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Building on its experience in post-disaster reconstruction and area development, it supported community-based projects that helped restore livelihoods while decreasing the vulnerability of communities in the tsunami-affected area. Since its establishment in 2005, the Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance (AKAM) has taken over 25 years of microfinance activities, programmes and banks that were administered by sister agencies within the AKDN. The underlying objectives of the Agency are to reduce poverty, diminish the vulnerability of poor populations and alleviate economic and social exclusion. more
